Zero
Valent Iron Injection
A new technology for the treatment
of residual contamination attributable to the Chlorinated Volatile Organic
Compounds (Cl VOCs) in the subsurface soils has been tested and applied
in the field by In-Situ Fixation, Inc (I-SF). I-SF is the first Company
to inject and evenly distribute fine iron particles into the soil in a
slurry batch process, utilizing an auger. The fine iron particles consisted
solely of carefully sized metallic Zero Valent Iron (Fe0). The Fe0 injection
can be used separately or simultaneously with the SM/TESVE process described
previously. In this application, iron, steam and hot air are simultaneously
injected into the soil during mixing. The steam and air quickly remove
the majority of the VOCs and the injected Fe0 continues the reaction process
where a reducing chemical state results in the de-chlorination of the
remaining VOCs. The ultimate result of this reaction process is the in-situ
removal of over 98% of the Cl VOCs from the soil.
